Creative psychotherapy for groups.

Flexible group therapy options

Creative group work offers us the opportunity to pay attention to ourselves in relation to others and, as such, it can hold amazing power.

A typical group session may involve each member initially checking in, moving onto a creative session where art is made, and then leaving some time and space free at the end for reflection, discussion and sharing within the group. On the other hand, the group can be organised differently: participants may choose to make a piece of artwork together, for example.

The format of the group itself is also flexible, with options including:

Open Group

An ongoing group with a fixed number, but members join and leave when they are ready to do so (as one member leaves, a new member joins).

Closed Group

A group with a fixed number of the same members.

Themed Group

A group of varying time length (as appropriate) with a particular remit.

Long-term Group

An ongoing group that becomes established (albeit open or closed).

Short-term Group

A group with a fixed membership and duration.

Supervision Group

A group of professionals who are bringing their work to enable sharing, understanding and development.

Support Group

A group with the simple purpose of offering support to each member.

During the group work, our reactions to what goes on in the room have the potential to surprise us, as does witnessing the moments when we are able to be authentic (and not so authentic).

Group members are encouraged not to communicate outside of the weekly meeting, so that everything that happens within the group in a certain week can be processed together. This way, the group remains safe, and participants feel honoured and respected.

Depending on the size and function of the group, timings can vary, but 2 hours is a good benchmark for a group of 6 to 8 participants. A smaller group of 4 may find 90 minutes sufficient (but not always).
